Why did we choose Peru?

• It has high forest cover, totaling more than 170 million acres (second only to Brazil in Latin America).
• There was a recent change of government, providing a window of opportunity for the advancement of indigenous issues.
• The government recently signed a “Consultation Law” that gives indigenous groups decision-making power over mining and oil projects.
• There is a need to demarcate many new indigenous areas.
• There is a strong indigenous movement.
