Where We Work

Why we work where we do

It might seem simple – the Rainforest Foundation works in areas where there are rainforests overlapping with the traditional lands of indigenous peoples. But in order to use our limited resources most effectively, we follow a strict rationale for choosing where to focus our efforts each year.
We choose countries where:

  • Land rights are a top priority for indigenous peoples
  • There is a distinct and immediate window of opportunity for change
  • There is potential to set a precedent within the country or internationally
  • We have existing partnerships with indigenous organizations
  • There is high forest cover
  • We can make a tangible difference with a modest amount of funding
  • We are currently focusing our work in four countries: Brazil, Guyana, Panama, and Peru.
