The Rainforest Foundation Is Accepting Cryptocurrency Donations
BROOKLYN—The Rainforest Foundation US is now accepting Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency donations. The Rainforest Foundation is a top-rated environmental charity founded by Sting in 1989 to protect the rainforest by partnering with indigenous communities of the Amazon and beyond—to date, it has saved more than 28 million acres of rainforest.
The charity will be accepting cryptocurrency donations directly through their donation page just in time for the holiday season. In addition to accepting Bitcoin, the Rainforest Foundation also accepts Ether, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash, and has plans to expand into other cryptocurrencies.
“Saving our rainforests is a race against time—it’s a challenge that requires new and disruptive ways of tapping support, along with innovative ways of protecting the rainforest,” explains Suzanne Pelletier, Executive Director of The Rainforest Foundation.
This kind of out of the box thinking is not new to The Rainforest Foundation. Thirty years ago, it was one of the first organizations that connected human rights with the environment. Currently, The Rainforest Foundation uses drones and GPS technology to protect the forests. Nor is it the organizations’ first experience with cryptocurrency; in 2015, The Rainforest Foundation launched BitSeeds, a cryptocurrency created to fund and facilitate rainforest protection, and the organization is currently planning on re-launching BitSeeds as a token in 2018.
“Today we know saving the rainforest is no longer just about safeguarding biodiversity, it is about protecting our planet from climate change,” explains Pelletier. “Accepting cryptocurrency donations is a logical next step for us; it’s time to be as innovative with our funding as we are with our conservation work.”
