Protests against Belo Monte Dam

Hundreds of people – including leaders from communities that would be affected by its construction – turned out to protest the Belo Monte Dam in Brasilia earlier this week. On January 26, the federal environmental agency, IBAMA, issued a provisional license for the dam, which would allow construction to begin soon. The license has been challenged, by activists, communities, and the Federal Prosecutors Office, as it was granted despite the nearly complete lack of compliance with environmental and social conditions.

Protesters in Brasilia met with government officials, and handed over a petition from Avaaz, signed by over 600,000 people, including many of you. The Rainforest Foundation has supported indigenous peoples in the Xingu since its very founding. We encourage you to stay informed, and support the campaign.
